Michele’s Story

Michele (Age: 65+)

I have no idea how many times I’ve fainted!...I’ve laid down on so many floors!

SINGING PRACTICE

Michele describes herself as an “avocational or occasional singer”. When asked about what singing means to her, she said: “everything! an outlet, a source of friends, survival in hard times, [and] happiness”.

MICHELE’S STORY

Michele began fainting during college and was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) in her 30s. In her 50s, she had a severe Traumatic Brain Injury from one time when she fainted. Michele is currently seeking a diagnosis for Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hEDS).

Has your singing practice or pursuit of singing shifted in any way since your diagnosis/onset of symptoms?

Michele states that her symptoms have “always been a part of my life.I've learned to sit on the risers when needed. I know to not ignore my symptoms.”

MICHELE’S ADVICE

For singers with her conditions:

At the first symptom […] get on the floor before you break something.

For professionals working with singers with these conditions:

Be understanding and don't think they are weak or faking.
