Beatrice’s Story

Beatrice (Age: 35-44)

SINGING PRACTICE

Beatrice describes herself as someone who used to sing, but does not anymore, detailing that she “used to be in choirs.” Beatrice loves the group creativity involved in singing with others.

BEATRICES’ STORY

I have had symptoms of EDS and POTS since puberty but wasn't diagnosed until my mid to late 30s. I quit choir prior to diagnosis due to fainting, choking (which turns out to be laryngeal spasms), and breathing troubles.

Has your singing practice or pursuit of singing shifted in any way since your diagnosis/onset of symptoms?

I used to be a first soprano. Now, when I try to sing, I tend to be an alto or tenor. There are also days when I cannot find the key at all, which is horrifying. I also used to sing around the house frequently and no longer do.

BEATRICE’S ADVICE

For singers with her conditions:

Consider singing another voice part if that prevents triggering symptoms. Find someone who can help you. I never found any provider who cared that I couldn't sing or find the key consistently.

For professionals working with singers with these conditions:

Listen to them even if what they're describing is inconsistent.
