Niki’s Story

Niki (Age: 55-64)

EDSers are some of the hardest working and most talented people you'll have the opportunity to work with. They may need a little extra rest, extra time, a little gentleness at times. But they will come through for you and shine.

SINGING PRACTICE

I've moved into kirtan singing, leading and recording (previously opera and music theater.

NIKI’S STORY

Like many, I was told I was "just anxious" for the first decades of my life and career. I knew I couldn't keep up with others in terms of stamina, but had no idea why.

Has your singing practice or pursuit of singing shifted in any way since your diagnosis/onset of symptoms?

ACCOMMODATIONS THAT HELP

The only "accommodation" I ever asked for was that the stage manager knew I have a bladder issue and might disappear for a few moments to use the facilities.

NIKI’S ADVICE

Be upfront and concise, but undramatic about your limitations, such as needing to sit down more often than others or use the bathroom. You have rights - they will be better enforced with a union behind you.

For professionals working with singers with these conditions:
